What The NERC Directive On Un-metered Customers & Bill Payment Really Said

In view of the story in the public space to the effect that NERC has directed customers who have not been metered to stop paying electricity bills given to them by the DisCos, it has become pertinent for us to offer the following clarification.

The NERC statement specifically refers to MD customers, not all categories of customers.

We are happy to report that our MD customers have been provided with meters as directed by NERC and are no longer billed by estimation.

The term MD customer means Maximum Demand – customers that consume in excess of 50kVA on a monthly basis.90-95% of customers that fall under this description are commercial customers as well as large multi storey residential luxury apartments. These customers usually have their own dedicated transformers and are not on public transformers.

Customers not classified as MD are termed Non-MD or rely on public transformers for their daily consumption.

The tariffs charged for NMD customers (under Ikeja Electric for e.g) ranges from N21.30 (R2SP)-N21.80 (R2TP) for residential and N27.20 (C1SP) -N28.47 (C1TP) for commercial.

MD customers on the other hand are charged N28.32 for residential & N38.86 for commercial classes.

While we are making concerted effort to provide meters for all our customers, we shall continue to ensure the integrity of our bills and will do everything within our mandate to comply with all NERC directives.

We, therefore, urge our non-MD customers to please avail themselves of the content of the directive and be rightly guided.

We further urge our esteemed customers and the general public not to be swayed by publications whose sole objective is to drive discourse away from the original intent of the statement in order to achieve objectives that are not in the overall interest of the public.
